How Habitat Works

Habitat’s unique and sensible formula makes it possible for limited-income households to own a home they can afford. With volunteer labor and local donations of money and some in-kind materials, Habitat Pinellas builds and rehabilitates houses with the help of the homeowner families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families or individuals at no profit and financed with zero-interest loans.  Watch our brief video!

What Makes Habitat Unique?

Building Locally
Habitat Pinellas is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the nonprofit housing organization based in Americus, GA. Like all affiliates, we raise our funds locally to create affordable housing opportunities for people in Pinellas County.

Building Globally
For every home built in Pinellas, a home is built overseas. Tithing a portion of our funds helps support HfHI’s effort to eliminate poverty housing around the world.

Building Green, Building to Last
The Habitat Pinellas approach to homebuilding focuses on long-term sustainability for both the homeowner and the environment. We utilize durable building materials with a long lifespan and low maintenance costs. We design homes that are resistant to high winds and as a result homebuyers have relatively low annual insurance costs. Our homes are built with additional insulation, high-efficiency windows and energy-efficient appliances. As a result, the homes utilize significantly less energy than comparable new homes in the marketplace. This approach is a win-win for both Habitat homeowners and the environment.

Building Brings People Together
We build with all people regardless of race, background or religious beliefs. We don’t just do that because it is part of the Equal Housing Opportunity law. We do it because our differences strengthen our community. We do it because we are a Christian-based organization, and it’s the right thing to do.

Building with Dignity
Homeowner candidates build their own futures by building a home of their own. They invest hundreds of hours of labor “sweat equity” into building homes for others. They attend homeowner classes (like financial planning and home maintenance) that help them to be independent and successful. Once their home is built, they continue to give back to the community because their mortgage helps to fund the building of more homes.

Building with YOU
We build because of people like YOU! What would you like to do to help make it possible for Habitat Pinellas to help more families?
