Do You Qualify?

MYTH:  Habitat gives away free homes to the poor.

FACT:  Habitat sells homes at 0% interest to those who qualify.

QUALIFICATION CRITERIA
To apply for a home, you must meet the following criteria*:

  • Fit within our specific income range. (Your household income needs to be at least $2,100 monthly).
  • Have a housing need. Are you living in conditions such as:
    - Overcrowded conditions.
    - Unsafe, unsanitary conditions.
    - Substandard housing – with a leaky roof, poor heating or lacking proper plumbing.
    - Paying a very high percentage of your income for rent (more than 30%).
  • Lived or worked in Pinellas for at least one year.
  • Have one year of steady, reliable income.
  • Have reasonably good credit. We don’t require perfect credit. We consider families who demonstrate the ability to make regular payments on their bills.
  • If you do not meet these requirements, exceptions are rare and would be made on a case-by-case basis. You also can find more affordable housing information by visiting www.floridahousingsearch.org.

* Please review our Homeowner Screening and Qualification Process outline for more details.

Income Range Requirements
The income level required is based on the number of people who would be living in the home. This is between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for Pinellas County, (the numbers are based on guidelines adjusted each year and defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)). These figures include all forms of income: employment, public assistance, Social Security, disability, child support, etc.
