Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Collegiate Challenge 2012 house for Habitat PinellasThis year's Collegiate Challenge Spring Build house, which was also sponsored by Catalina Marketing Charitable Foundation, has been completed and the dedication and presentation of the keys to the McDaniel family will take place on:

Saturday, April 21 at 9 a.m. at 1753 12th Avenue N., St. Petersburg.  (Map)

All family, friends and Habitat volunteers and supporters are welcome to attend.

The McDaniel family home was built by students from eight universities from throughout the country during the six weeks of Habitat's annual Collegiate Challenge.  Instead of spending their spring break on the beach, these exceptional students chose to spend their week helping Habitat Pinellas.  Thank you to each and every one of these students! Check out the photo albums from each university's volunteer week at our Collegiate Challenge Facebook page.

Many thanks to all the students and to the McDaniel family home sponsor, Catalina Marketing Charitable Foundation!

Almost a hundred friends, Habitat Pinellas supporters and City of Largo officials came out to celebrate the Soto family home during a sunny Sunday afternoon dedication. The April 1st dedication included several presenters including Largo Mayor Pat Gerard and Shirley Miaoulis from the Office of Congressman W.C. Young, who presented the family with a special flag that has been flown over the U.S. Capitol. Largo City Commissioner Michael Smith was also in attendance.

The enthusiastic attendees were treated to a violin serenade by Milani Soto who played a wonderful rendition of "America the Beautiful." Another fun moment came when Mili Soto presented her daughter with a new puppy.

Special thanks to the NISSAN Corporation, sponsor of the Soto home, and also to our land sponsor, the City of Largo. Habitat Pinellas received grant money to help build the home from the Nissan Americas Green Program. The sustainable building grant also included a new Nissan Frontier truck for Habitat's construction department.

Congratulations to the Soto family on your beautiful new Habitat home!

Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity volunteers from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will put an exclamation point on the final week of Collegiate Challenge, as they complete the McDaniel family home that more than 120 college students have helped build this spring. For much of this week, the volunteers will also work on the Lewis family home in Stevens Creek in Clearwater, which is in the beginning phases of construction.

The 20 fraternity volunteers chose to spend their spring break helping Habitat Pinellas build the McDaniel family home in St. Petersburg, which was sponsored by Catalina Marketing Charitable Foundation. This is Catalina's second consecutive year sponsoring a Collegiate Challenge designated house.

In addition to this week's Rose-Hulman volunteers, seven other university groups have already participated in our Collegiate Challenge during the past five weeks including Georgetown, Indiana University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Maryland at College Park, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota and Widener University

Heartfelt thanks to all of our college volunteers!  You've been awesome!

Four Lokey managers and some of our Habitat Pinellas staffers joined the Lewis family on the roof of Lokey's VW dealership to shoot a commercial touting Lokey's Roof Raiser. GM Jim Surrett will live on the dealership roof for the entire month of April -- all to benefit three Habitat families!

In addition, as Jim spends the month on the roof, Lokey Automotive Group Charities will donate $500 to Habitat Pinellas for every car it sells in April.

No fooling!  On the morning of April 1st, Jim climbed up on the roof to begin his month-long residency atop the VW dealership.  Visit the Lokey Roof Raiser Facebook page for regular updates on how Jim is doing and look for the link for the video webcam!

Better yet, stop by Lokey Volkswagon to wave to Jim on the roof.  Be sure to tell him thank you for his amazing support for Habitat Pinellas!

MANY THANKS to Lokey Automotive Group for dedicating their Roof Raiser efforts this year to Habitat Pinellas. We love you Lokey!
