Habitat Pinellas Site Supervisor Travels with Local Vet Group to War Memorials in D.C.

Habitat Pinellas site supervisor David Morris visits D.C. war memorialOn Tuesday, September 18th, our beloved site supervisor, David Morris, boarded a plane with other area WWII vets for an "Honor Flight" day trip to the war memorials in Washington, D.C.  David, a 19-year "veteran" of Habitat Pinellas, served in the U.S. Navy as a Signalman, 2nd Class, during WWII.

The nonprofit Honor Flight of West Central Florida organized its seventh  "Honor Flight of World War II Veterans" and provided the expenses-paid plane flights and war memorial tours to 76 local WWII vets. The group left the St. Pete/Clearwater Airport at 6 a.m. and spent the day in D.C. touring the WWII, Iwo Jima, Vietnam, and Korean War Memorials. David said the adventure also included a visit to the Lincoln Memorial and a bus tour of points of interest throughout the Capitol area.

After their whirlwind day, the vets stepped off the return plane at 9 p.m. to a cheering crowd of nearly 400 people, an honor guard and a band. Among the well-wishers was General Norman Schwarzkopf.  "I got the honor of shaking his hand," said David. (He said his son captured a photo of that moment, which we promised to publish as soon as we receive it. Check back with our blog soon or stay tuned on our Facebook page!)

We're thrilled for David that he was able to participate in this wonderful trip that honors our cherished military veterans!
